I HAVE YET ANOTHER NEW JOB--- (IF TOMORROWS INTERVIEW GOES WEL) THIS IS WHAT IT IS...
A Typical Day in the Breeding Kennel The BK is staffed from 7 AM to 7 PM seven days a week (and until 9 PM on Wednesday, which is the day any planned surgeries are performed). Dogs are constantly arriving and departing throughout the day. The number of dogs occupying the Kennel can vary widely from day to day.
At 7 AM the BK staff arrives and is greeted by a lot of hungry dogs & pups, all very glad to see us. The food bowls are prepared the night before so feeding goes quickly and since most of the dogs are Labs the eating goes even faster! They have tremendous appetites.
Immediately after breakfast the dogs go out to “get busy” in their outdoor runs. This is when we clean the inside kennels. Meanwhile, in the puppy section pups are put into individual crates and moved out of the kennel area so it can be cleaned. This “crate time” is important because it helps the pups become comfortable with this environment (where they will be when traveling to a home and spending the night). When all the indoor kennel cleaning is finished (soaped, scrubbed, disinfected, rinsed & dried plus fresh paper in the puppy section) the dogs come back in and pups & dogs nap. Next the outdoor runs are cleaned. It takes one or two people to do that. Two others begin “brood progressions”. These are the testing procedures done on all broods to monitor their heat cycles. After this we would do any scheduled breedings. At noon it is time for “puppy lunch”, they are hungry and impatient, every pup thinks it should be first! Once calm is restored, we take a break and have our lunch. The afternoon is filled with multiple tasks such as; dog handling & exercise, check overs, work on procedures, phone calls, transportation arrangements, paperwork, crate cleaning, preparation for the next day, etc.”
Around 3:30 PM it is feeding time for the dogs. Then at 4 PM the staff members that came in at 7 AM depart for home. Finally, it’s time for the pups dinner. In “puppy time” it seems like an eternity since lunch so there is lots of “joyous anticipation” while we get their bowls ready. Some days we have Volunteers to work with us in the BK. They are tremendous and we are so thankful for them and their help.
By 7 PM all are settled and safe, warm, fed, well-loved and happy. The remaining staff go home to their own 2 and 4- legged friends where they are, of course, warmly welcomed.
